What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free.
WHO SHOULD APPLY?
Musicians, dancers, storytellers, poets and others who have expressions which celebrate African American history and heritage.
DO ARTISTS WHO PERFORM AT THE FESTIVAL RECEIVE PAYMENT?
Participants perform on a volunteer basis with the exception of select groups and performers who provide special programming and performances curated to preserve the history and heritage of the occasion.
WHAT ARE MY CHANCES OF BEING ACCEPTED AS A PERFORMER AT Juneteenth 2019?
All applications will be treated with respect and given proper consideration. Our staff and Festival Producer will work hard to find a slot for as many performers as possible. BUT PLEASE NOTE: Due to scheduling requirements, stage flow demands, availability of slots or other logistical or artistic considerations NOT ALL GROUPS that apply are guaranteed an invitation. We hope you understand that we want to present as many groups as possible each year; but the times, stages, and budget impose limits that we must work within.
